GROFFIMG.BMP

Post by dlachieze »

I was taking some screenshots on the DM42 and when I connected the DM42 to the PC I found a file called GROFFIMG.BMP in the SCREENS directory, along with my screen capture files.
I don't know how it was created, and why it has this specific name. Is this a hidden feature not yet fully implemented?

Did you look at it to see what it's a picture of?

Yes, it was a picture of the screen at the time of the file. So it seems that while doing screen captures with Shift+DISP I have somehow created also this file. What is strange is the name, as if it was possible to create a screen capture that will be used for the off screen.

Well, you can do that. The captured screen image files are the same format as the Off screen images. I've discovered the Off screen image use is not in the manual yet, so it could be news to some users.

Any (of the proper format) image files you copy to the OFFIMG folder of the Flash drive are used for the Off screen; if there are multiple images, it will cycle through them, one-at-a-time, each time you power-off.

The files are 400 x 240, 1-bit color depth (B&W) BMP format files.

But using an actual screen capture can obviously lead to confusing (and maybe humorous) behavior. "Wait, my DM42 was On, but when I pressed On, it came on with a different screen..." etc.

But I have no idea how a file with that name was created, it should be interesting to find out.

I just noticed that the GROFFIMG.BMP file on my DM42 has been updated and contains a new screen shot captured today during the test on my DPLOT version. I still don't know what is triggering the DM42 to capture a screen shot in this file.

The "GR" is obviously for something... is it possible these are shots that were captured when GRaphics mode was active? Perhaps the internal logic uses a different (and maybe buggy) naming convention for the screen grabs?

Yes they were captured in graphic mode but I didn't trigger the capture with Shift+DISP. All the ones that I captured intentionally are following a different naming convention with the date and time of the capture.

So, it's clear something in graphics mode is triggering screen capture and saving to file GROFFIMG.BMP

Well, I think that's about all we can do, the rest seems like a job for David.

@Didier - do you notice anything consistent about the GROFFIMG.BMP files, e.g. are they at the start of drawing, at the end, somewhere in the middle, etc? If you purge the file and run the program again, is a new file created every time the program is run?

The two GROFFIMG files I've seen so far are from the end of drawing. I've tried to run several times the same program but no new file has been created. I just happened to notice this file after doing some screen capture and looking in the SCREENS directory to copy them to my PC, so much later than when the GROFFIMG file was created. I can say for sure that when they were created I was not doing any screen capture with Shift+DISP, so it's a complete mystery.
Anyway, it's not a real issue, I'm just curious about what is triggering these files creation in the current DM42 software. And I wanted also to know if others are seeing the same thing on their DM42.

GROFFIMG.BMP is generated if one of the extended DM42 graphics modes ("GrMod" 2 or 3) is active, ie. if a graph rather than the stack is on screen, when the DM42 is powered off.
