82240 use?

I've a few questions about the use of the 82240A/B printer.

1) Is there any functional difference between the two for the DM42?

2) Can images on the entire screen (maximum resolution or otherwise) be sent to the printer? If not, how can an image displayed on the entire screen be sent to the printer? Is there a program already that reads pixel states and sends them to the printer or does one need to be cobbled together?

3) Is there any scope for Swiss Micros to manufacture their own clone of this printer? Perhaps credit card sized? Or landscape? (I hope my sense of humour isn't lost in translation).

3.1) If Swiss Micros did make their own clone printer, would it be possible for it to have USB support and compatibility with the DM-41[L]?

The biggest (only?) difference between the 82240A and 82240B is the fact that the latter can operate with two different character sets that are switchable by sending escape codes to the printer.

the "B" version has an auto standby/switch off feature.
when you forget to switch off the "A" printer - the batterys are empty in 2 days

I didn't know that. I thought the A had that too!

I wish SM would make one but I don't think it would be feasible from a monetary standpoint. Although I wouldn't buy a calculator that had no printing support, most people I've talked to say they have no use for a physical printer.

No, you can only print the screen in the legacy HP-42S display mode (see here for some details).

Such program is still to be written, knowing that the printing width is limited to 166 pixel.

Interesting. I'll see if I can get hold of a cheap printer, then I'll see if I can whip up a program to do it (with the usual limitations that my poor coding ability builds into any program I write).

Thank you (plural) for the help.
