How long do we have to wait until our DM42 has up to date system software,, as in the latest Free42 etc?...It has been a long time since the last update...

I think there's only been two Free42 changes that are relevant to the DM42, since the latest DM42's v2.2 and the current Free42 v2.5.9, namely the configurable word size, and a couple of fixes to SOLVE.

I'd quite like to see the former, but it doesn't seem like an emergency. Why is waiting a problem?

I suspect they're busy with DM41X stuff at the moment.

Actually, the current version is v2.5.10 and there have been a number of relevant bug fixes. However, it's been only a little over a month since the last update, and it seems that changes have been made to the Free42 code that makes it more difficult to incorporate into the DM42, so I can understand why there have been no further updates since then. Frankly, I think that the DM42 has become a very mature and stable device, such that further updates can be spaced out to longer intervals.

We know that Free42 2.4 is already out but that and 2.3 were released after DM42-3.14 went into feature freeze.
Incorporating the changes in Free42 2.4 is planned but that'll be for a future version of the DM42 firmware."

I have been very busy with Free42 in from July to September, so I can imagine SwissMicros wanting to wait for things to settle down before doing another merge. It will be a bigger one than usual: the BSIZE/BWRAP/BSIGNED changes for 2.4 were pretty big, and the state file changes for 2.5 were very big, and given how buggy they were at first, holding off would certainly have been the smart option.

Or maybe none of that factored into it and they simply decided to focus on the DM41X to the exclusion of everything else. That would make a lot of sense, too!

As far as Free42 is concerned, I don't have any plans for further development, at least apart from bug fixing and whatever changes may be forced onto me by Apple or Google, and a few minor tidbits that I'm in no hurry to work on. The 2.5-related bugs seem to have been shaken out, so if anyone was waiting for a good moment to merge, this is probably it.
