% Character ?

Post by kevinvinv »

Love the 42S and the DM42!

I must have run into this before but I dont remember it. Does the 42 have a "%" character somewhere in the Alpha menu?

I wand to have a menu item lableled % or %Diff or things like this.

Looks like I cant find a % alpha character anywhere... is that right?

Thanks all!!

It's interesting. At first I couldn't enter the Percent Character, but I knew from the Character Table
in the Manuel that Char Code 37 (Dec) is the percent character.

The setting of Character Entry mode affects what is entered as follows:

[A] pressing Shift RCL will enter H in alpha register
[a] pressing Shift RCL will enter h in alpha register
[ ] pressing Shift RCL will enter % in alpha register

Thanks for this reply.

Sorry to be dense... could you explain what [A] means in your post?

I do see that shift-RCL does %... that is odd! How did you figure that out?

In the classic 42 ALPHA mode, the "%", "Pi" and "E" special characters are entered by pressing the keys where those characters appear on the keyboard. The "E" mentioned here is not the letter E, it's the special character used to express Exponent, which is the key to the right of the [+/-] key.

Refer to "Alpha Input Mode" in the DM42 manual:

Thank you for your kind reply. Thanks very much. Here is a snippet.

Alpha Input Mode
Upon entering Alpha input mode you will see a new annunciator on the screen:

"[ ]" denotes original HP-42S input mode. This is the mode that Alpha input starts with when entered for the first time.

"[a]" denotes lower case DM42 input mode.

"[A]" denotes upper case DM42 input mode.
