I hate quoting myself.
WP43 SN00000, 34S, and 31S for obvious reasons; HP-35, 45, ..., 35S, 15CE, DM16L S/N# 00093, DM42β SN:00041
Re: Iconic Space Photos
I tried but was not able to create a nice picture of the earthrise over the moon. Just got plain black and white areas without any subtle details, this type of picture doesn't map well on 240x400 black&white.

Re: Iconic Space Photos
Anyway, thanks for trying! Merci bien!

Re: Iconic Space History Photos
There's room for improvement here, but here's my first try:
http://thomasokken.com/misc/earthrise.exp.bmp
Converted image to greyscale, increased contrast a bit, then converted to 1-bit using clustered-dot dithering (pgmtopbm -c3).
This could probably be done better by brightening the moonscape a bit and then applying Floyd-Steinberg dithering instead of clustered dot.

Re: Iconic Space History Photos
Thanks Thomas! Well, Walter you see what I meant: all details are lost on the moon surface and without its characteristic color, the earth is not recognizable. At the end, for me, the converted picture is not related anymore to earth and moon.

Re: Iconic Space History Photos
The loss of color does indeed remove a component of drama from this photo, but I believe for most of us the image is still iconic enough to tell its story.
I attempted some selective contrast adjustments before dithering in an attempt to retain some of the detail.

Note: as requested, I've hosted these on a separate server. The firewall for that server may be blocking access for some of you, though. If someone else is willing to host them on a less restrictive server I'd be happy to update the image links.

Re: Iconic Space History Photos
Dank Uw & thankyou, Thomas and David! This view is iconic enough indeed to transport its message even in b/w. Looks like Thomas created some extra stars for the background though. Alas, in reality the universe is emptier than in StarWars by far. Which makes the picture even more meaningful (hi D.T., did you hear that? Still going to spoil this blue marble? And leave the dirty washing to us when you die? Totally reckless!).

I confirm the firewall restriction, I don't have access to your pictures.
