Thanks very much, a useful tip. Be nice to know analogous tricks for G-drive and One-Drive.

Need help with DM42 pictures

Post by dlomshek »

As I don't even have a system using Windows NT what else can I use to produce OFFIMG pictures of Windows-NT.bmt of 400 x 200 pixels and 1 bit color depth?

AFAIK you can use PAINT (available on each and every Windows PC) and store your file as monochrome .BMP.

Paint has no dithering. You'll get just black and white patches.

Sorry I didn't recognize your unwritten wish ;) But I faintly remember someone wrote about this topic on this forum, IIRC. Maybe worthwhile searching ...

I've always used the GIMP

Start by converting to greyscale at the required resolution of 400x240, then convert to 1-bit depth with Floyd-Steinberg dithering and you'll get pretty good results.
There are only 10 kinds of people in the world: those who understand binary and those who do not.

So it is best to convert to grayscale before converting to 1-bit depth? I tend to start with whatever image cropped (or sometimes padded) to the correct aspect ratio of 1.667:1. Then open in GIMP and scale to 400x240. Then I try the conversion to 1-bit (using Image->Index->Convert Image to Indexed Colors, select “Use black and white (1-bit) palette” with Floyd-Steinberg dithering). This of course converts a color image to black and white. If that looks good, I export to a bmp. More often than not, I undo the conversion, then mess with contrast and brightness in the color tools and try again. I do that a few times until I am satisfied, then export. I have not found a magic formula for adjusting the brightness and contrast to produce the best results. Sometimes I then open in paint to remove excess speckles from areas that are supposed to be totally black or otherwise touch things up. Finally copy to DM42 OFFIMG folder.

All in all, I probably take this much too seriously!
